About Rome

Rome, the capital of the Italian Republic and the most populous city in Italy, is a fascinating place where history, art and architecture join to create an amazing blend of cultural heritage. Also known as the “Eternal City”, Rome hosts the most famous monuments in the world and boasts the highest concentration of architectural heritage. The principal symbol of the city, the Coliseum, is situated in the historical city centre and represents the largest amphitheatre built during the Roman Empire. Rome is not only home to 16 percent of the world’s cultural treasures, but it is also host to 70 percent of the Italian treasures; in fact, the city centre is considered one of UNESCO’s most important World Heritage Sites. The Vatican City state, a foreign ecclesiastical entity, is also located within the city limits of Rome. Ancient and historic monuments, museums, parks and churches grace the city and make Rome one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world.
